- #2I'm guessing this is W7.
Have a look at this page to start off with https://www.howtogeek.com/247380/how-to-fix-windows-update-when-it-gets-stuck/ - #30
- #4No. OP is correct. It is KB4038777 that's the update for September.
Sometimes Windows fails to install updates first time. Windows recognises when an update fails to install and will try again. Normally it's successful 2nd time around. - edited 17/09/17 - 06:56#5I have just rechecked for up dates.
says I am up to date.
My up date history shows KB 4022405 is the latest update. No updates for September
I am on Windows 10 - #60
- #7The latest update is KB 4022405
I'm just updating my spare laptop with the latest updates and got an error message for this one ..... 'unable to install' or something like that
I'm retrying it - #80
- #9My new Dell 17.3 laptop did the same as well but worked on the second time.
- edited 18/09/17 - 12:14#10I completely failed to spot that I didn't specify W7 in my OP, so apologies for that. Tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter as suggested but it had no effect. Had about four goes at this update now and it still won't install.
Looking at my update history shows several updates from earlier in the year (and several more older than that) which failed and were never installed and are listed as 'important', rather than 'optional', so I'm gonna go through the list and try downloading and installing everything I can find that's missing manually and see if that makes any difference. - #111
- #12Thanks-on checking those, the two servicing stack updates are already installed and when I checked the July 2016 rollup it said this update not applicable to your computer. Thanks for the sugestion though, I'll keep working on the problem.
- edited 18/09/17 - 16:48#13I'm also on W7, but didn't have an issue with the updates. Did the Malicious Removal Tool install OK?
I find on the odd occasion where an update fails first time is to leave it alone. Then usually within 24 hours W7 will inform me again the update is ready to be installed and then it works OK. You could run an 'sfc/ scannow' to check if your system is corrupt. - #14Thanks-on checking those, the two servicing stack updates are already installed and when I checked the July 2016 rollup it said this update not applicable to your computer. I bought a new computer in March this year with Win 7 64bit Pro.
The manufacturing date of the computer was 2014 but it had never been used except to open the side panel in order to double the RAM to 8GB. So it hadn't been updated for a few years.
My pevious Win 7 machine caught the serching forever bug and that link I left cured it for me, but I've just thought that you didn't mention the constant looking for updates so maybe its an entirely different problem.
My new machine updated without problems and I haven't had any since. You can have a look through mine and see whats missing.
I haven't got the knack of posting in this new layout yet so ....

Another option that also worked for me but took longer was WSUS online .... http://download.wsusoffline.net/ - #15I'm also on W7, but didn't have an issue with the updates. Did the Malicious Removal Tool install OK?

Ran the sfc which reported some damaged files which were unable to be repaired. I'll have a look at the log and see what to try next. - edited 27/09/17 - 04:10#16I'm also on W7, but didn't have an issue with the updates. Did the Malicious Removal Tool install OK?

Use/download System Update Readiness Tool to solve this problem. Or if you have a System Restore point that goes back a few months (unlikely) you could try that first to see if it's successful. If so, you'll need to run 'sfc /scannow' again to ensure corruption wasn't present then.
